I looked into pet insurance for my dog, she was 9 at the time and they DO NOT cover anything at that age, FOr me it was a waste of money to apply for pet insurance
Will this make more people go for the puppy & kitten stage of 8weeks old, rather then considering an older dog or cat? it says most policy with pet insurance start at 8weeks old.

No, I think it will just mean that people will just not bother with pet insurance for old dogs.

Not really as most people do not have pet insurance. I work for a vet and we probably see maybe four claims forms a year. Most people want young animals so that they can spent their lives with them and train them the way that they want too. Older pets still have a lot to give but sadly that seems to be a greatly kept secret.
I’m not a big fan of pet insurance. It seems to be quite expnsive when compared to the cost of vet care in my area. I just put the amount that is required for one animal in a savings account every month. This is what I use for my three dogs and three cats. There always seems to be money in it.

I don’t think pet insurance is popular enough yet to prevent many people from adopting older dogs. Old dogs are already difficult to adopt out because most people want young dogs. I doubt that the insurance issue will affect that much. A lot of people first learn about pet insurance when they buy a puppy because AKC registration includes a free trial. Those who go to shelters looking for older dogs are less likely to seriously consider getting insurance anyway.

personally I think those insurance policies are a rip off, no matter what the age of the pet.
The cost of the insurance for my dog, for the cheapest plans, was about $20-30 a month.. which still included a co-pay for routine things and emergency care. I dont spend that much on medical care for my dog.. I felt it was better for me to save the $20-30 each month in a bank account and accumulate interest.. if my dog needs emergency care, funds are there.. if not, well its money that wasnt wasted, its there for something else.
