My cat is 9 years old, she doesnt normally drink loads of water but recently she is drinking a lot, over the last few weeks she has been drinking more than usual but this morning she helped herself to my water that was in a glass on the floor and so I filled it up and let her have it and she was drinking for ages… it could be because i gave her dried food this morning but when shes had dried food in the past, although she does drink more, she doesnt drink THAT much!
My parents are away at the moment and they have all her vet/insurance policy information etc.
Other than the drinking a lot she is absolutely fine in herself, still eating and as michevious and friendly as ever so I dont know if its just that she is just thirstier!
Anyone have any ideas?

As you said. it may be the food. or she can just be dehydrated. unless there is another issue your parents didn’t tell you about. do you notice if she uses the litter box much after drinking allot?? this also is a Sign of dehydration. just keep a close eye on her till Your parents return. then tell them about this also. good luck hope this helps some.

2 months ago my cat all of a sudden started drinking LOTS of water but other than that she was fine. Then after a while not only was she drinking loads of water she became very lethargic too. Looked on net at symptoms and to my horror all led to renal problems :-S after a few trips to the vet it turns out to be diabetes which is pretty manageable. Maybe yours is simply dehydrated but please keep your eye on your cat for any upcoming symptoms like i mentioned just incase.

is the weather warmer than usual? is she maybe more active?
it’s probably just something simple like that.
just make sure there’s plenty of water availably to her until you can get her to a vet. keep a close eye on her behavior and look for other signs as well

Could be the food you feed the cat contains too much sodium. Could be a sign of feline diabetes. A cat I had several years ago was drinking way too much and the vet determined it was diabetes. Only a vet can tell you for sure.

I dont mean to scare you but increased thirst and urination is the first symptom of kidney failure. Have a blood test done immediatly. even if that isnt the problem, a vet should be able to tell you the problem.

It is warmer than it usually is in your house? Is she playing more? Is it an ingredient in her food? Is she pregnant? Ask a vet. Thats what I would do.

You do need to bring her to the vet quickly whether your parents are away or not because greatly increased thirst is a symptom of serious illness. Have your mother or father call the vet with their credit card information. Have one of them tell you where the policy information is kept. Then bring her in yourself.
Increased thirst may indicate diabetes or renal failure. Renal failure should not cause flank pain to my knowledge. I had a cat with crf and she did not have tender flanks at any stage.
If she has either of these illnesses it is best to get it diagnosed and to begin a treatment plan as soon as possible. You could at least bring her in for a complete physical with bloodwork so your parents will have that step out of the way when they return.
