We own both a Yorkie terrier and a tabby cat. We’ve been looking for the past few weeks at pet insurance for them both. We know Petplan is meant to be the best but in reality is way too expensive. We’ve also looked at others such as Tesco which are cheaper but don’t cover you for most things I was thinking about putting a certain amount of money each month into a bank account such as £20 a month. We was wondering if anyone else does this instead of paying expensive premiums and if anyone has any advice.

actually there is a program thru banfield pet hospitals all over the country they are everywhere. they are inside petsmart buildings and you can go to their website too. they have plans that are similar to insurance except you actually use every single thing on the plan. it covers vaccines, heartworm tests, fecal tests, unlimited exams, deworming, spay/neuter, bloodwork, dental cleanings and on and on and its very inexpensive. i would check to see if there is one of them near you somewhere and check out what they call a wellness plan. also there is something called vpi, veterinary pet insurance but i like the banfield thing better

I agree with kumala, insurance is the best option. I suppose you need to put it into perspective; my friend’s cat had to have a thyroid operation and that was about £3000. If you was to save £20 a month to pay for something like that it would take you about 12 years. Its a bummer but worth doing.

Insurance is way safer and worth the extra I’m afraid. Yorkies are prone to all sorts of very very expensive diseases that could land you with (my friend’s had this prob) a £15,000 bill for one illness.
