What Do You Think About Pet Insurance?

February 13th, 2010 → 6:20 am @ // 4 Comments

My cat has a very sensitive tummy. We have changed her food to Science Plan for sensitive stomachs. But she was still being sick every few days. So we took her to the vet Friday and they suggested there cat food. If she is still being sick in 8 weeks to take her back for tests. We do not have pet insurance at the moment and thought of paying out for loads of test scares me a little. Is it to late to get pet insurance for this. They do not cover pre existing medical conditions but as she has not been diagnosed with anything would she be covered. Any ideas would be welcome.

put the equivalent amount of money into a savings account every month instead and then use it if you need it. with excess etc and insurance rip offs you will probably find your self in pocket if you dont ever need to pay any high bills

I don’t like pet insurance because not all vets take it, I find it much easier to have a “pet savings account” at a bank just for vet bills.

Depending on what type of animal you have it may or may not be a good idea to get pet insurance.
I have 2 horses (amongst other animals) & so far have cost me (or my father rather) $10,000 on medical issues which do not include spring time shots & necessities. My gelding has coliced & my mare was lately misdiagnosed with colic & payed $6,000 just for being dehydrated! I’d deffinetly get insurance on large farm animals like that. Unforunately my horses are too old to get insurance on, but it would be an excellent thing to have.
Dogs, cats, ext.. I’d just put money away for them if anything ever did come up. I have 2 Pit Bull puppies that have already cost us a good penny at the vet’s for getting into trouble, but I feel like I would have been spending more if we had insurance on them vs. putting money away for emergencies.
