What About Pet Insurance?

I just came across a website about pet insurance and am a little thrown off.. i don’t really grasp the concept unless your cat has a bad immune system, breaks their bones a lot, or needs extensive surgeries. what is pet insurance really all about? is it worth it?
my kitten is 9 weeks and is NOT an outside cat. i’m up-to-date on her shots and everything is normal. when we got her, the lady was exceptionally nice and showed us the mother and that everything was fine with her. i tried looking around the website but it just wanted me to pick out a plan that i liked- it really didn’t give me examples or persuade me about why i needed it.

Pet insurance is for unexpected illnesses or accidents. I heard about a lady whose cat liked to play with ribbon and swallowed a bunch of it, so the trip to the vet was expensive and that’s where insurance comes in. I know that puppies like to eat anything they can find as well which can lead to expensive vet procedures. Plus who knows if your cat will get cancer or diabetes?
It’s certainly a personal choice of whether to get insurance. If you’re interested in shopping around for a good company (because there are around a dozen pet insurance companies in the US) you should visit http://www.petinsurancereview.com to see what actual customers are saying about each company.
Personally, I think it’s a good idea unless you have a few thousand dollars lying around in case of an accident. I have Trupanion for my dog and they are great– no claim limits or annual limits and they dont increase the premium as your pet ages. Watch out for companies with benefits schedules/fee schedules.
Good luck to you and your kitten! :)
