First of all- basic info:
- I’m 19 years old, live with my parents (yeah, ha-ha, go ahead, make fun…I get free food.)
- They’ve been paying for most of the cat food & litter, although I offer frequently to cover the costs (I work a 9-5 job, and would be able to afford it.) They paid for the adoption and initial vetting for my current two cats (7 months old and 10 months old).
- I have well over enough money to pay for another cat’s adoption fee and spay/neuter as well as initial vaccinations and first check up.
- Starting June 22, I’ll be paying higher health insurance bills for 6 months. (In addition to car payment, car insurance, gas, cell phone, etc… which are all completely manageable.) So money may get tight for awhile, but still I’d be able to afford emergency vet care and such.
- My dad does scoop the litter boxes, but that’s only because he INSISTS, (because once, he accompanied me on a trip to the allergist, who informed him that I was allergic to cats, and litterboxes were a source of cat allergen spores, so he’s since been paranoid…)
And it was like I was torturing them, trying to talk them into getting my first two cats (which they have since fallen in love with. My big “macho” dad even talks baby-talk to them.)
What can I do to convince them to let me bring home a 3rd cat?
Okay here are things that are NOT options:
- Moving out.
- Just flat-out disregarding the ‘asking permision’ issue, and bring it home anyway.
- Hypnotherapy. (It’s just not in my budget.)
So first off, in this situation, do you think getting a third cat is even a good idea?
And also, any advice on how to convince them?
(P.S. Sorry about how long this is, but please read as much as you can, I’d really appreciate any help you can give!)

Hey
I know what you mean about the torture it its convincing them!!
About getting another cat – it depends on how your cats you have already are, their personalities and gender. We had 2 cats and they got on fine, a girl and a boy. We got another kitten and he was a boy, i suggested that we get a girl so as not to upset the male cat we already had (what with male teritory issues ;p) and yeah, basicaly the cats dont get on because there too much cat testosterone and a lot of bullying and itimidating goes on at feet level! so you need to think about how getting another cat will affect the two.
About convincing them, i would just explain that you will pay for it, therefore it will not put a stain on them
That you will do the cleanin out if that is the problem (haha you could always suggest you get a dust mask to stop the alergy!)
and if you can at least get them to agree looking at the cats available im sure they will fall in love and want one (maybe soften them up by looking at baby pictures and talking about family memories or summat! get them in the awww mood!)
hope thats some help!
