I am looking to buy a car, and wondering whether a car that had been stolen with keys, and recovered (but not before the insurance company had paid out for it) will have problems getting insurance, similar to cars rated as Cat C, or Cat D?

if you want to insure a car thats a cat d , it could cost you a bit more , if you have an acident in a cat d car and it is writen off your insurance company will not pay you the full value and could be as much as 3 or 4 hundred [...]

It WILL NOT lower the price that it can be insured for. It will reduce the maximum amount that they would pay out in the event of a total loss. That would be somewhat less than the amount for the identical car without the Cat C. Some companies will not cover Cat C cars.
