Pet Insurance Or Child Sponsor?

January 22nd, 2010 → 6:22 pm @ // 8 Comments

Here is my problem. I have a two year old orange tabby who I am considering getting pet insurance for before she has problems, I also have a sponsored child in Kenya who has two more years of sponsorship left. My husband said we can get pet insurance only if I drop my sponsored child. Do tabby cats have more health problems then other cats? Would it be to late to get insurance when she is 4 or 5? What would you do? Please explain. Our animals are our only children and human children are not in our future which makes this a tougher choice.

If you do decide to get pet insurance, make sure the policy you get covers what you want. Many policies have different coverages, even within the same company. You might want to try reviewing some of the policy information online, print it out and then call the company and ask some questions. Ask for an example of the coverage using a typical vet visit for an injury to see what would be covered.
Read up on things like deductibles, exclusions, policy limits among others. These terms are often used when describing a policy. Try reading about some of these things at http://www.thebestpetinsurance.com it has some of the basics outlined pretty well.
As for the sponsorship overseas, its tough to say how much money your sponsored child is getting. If you decide to stay with that, make sure the company is spending upwards of 80% on the kids. Check the Better Business Bureau http://welcome.bbb.org as a good starting point for the background of the company.
Personally, I’d probably opt for the pet insurance. Best of luck to you.

Pet isurance is not like people insurance, I had it for my animals for a few months but if something happens you still pay for it out of pocket and then you file a claim and then they mail you a check to cover SOME of the cost (in my experience it was a very little percentage). I don’t know about you but i wouldn’t have the money to cover a huge expense out of the blue (that’s why i wanted insurance). I spent more on the monthly cost then I got back. unless you can find a pet insurance that works like people insurance I recommend putting money aside in a savings account and just using that if something happens.
Also, waiting till 4 or 5 should be fine, it is unlikely the cat will have any problems at such a young age.

without question, i’d get the pet insurance, i dont know who or what organization you are giving to, but did you know, that over 80 percent of the money you think you’re giving to some kid on the other side of the world is NOT GOING to them??? more than half of the “childrens organizations out there are b.s.!!! So unless you’ve gone and gotten all the finance reports, NOT from the organization but from that department in OUR government and their’s you’re wasting your money, Get the pet insurance…
no tabbys have no special problems, no more than other cats, but if you let your cat outdoors, you’re shortening his/her life by about 5 years, and yes, you will def. use the insurance.

I’ve not heard real good reviews on pet insurance, but I did find some helpful information that basically says if you do decide to get pet insurance you should get it when your pets are young. Ideally, you’ll want to identify right pet insurance plan for you, and get your pet in young while she’s still quite healthy. The reason is, should your pet develop a long-term health issue such as a thyroid problem, she won’t be eligible for many programs, having a “pre-existing condition.” If you stick with one quality program, though, you’ll probably be fine.

Pet insurance is a luxury for the US Wealthy. It is not necessary. Most pets only need routine annual shots throughout there life. They run into problems if you delay getting them the shot. Illiness then has a chance to start, and it’s hard to stop…. even if paying higher vet fees.
Sponsor the child. It not only saves you money on your income Taxes (as charity), it’s a good thing to do. Your pet will have your love and attention – either way.

Hi. I know this must be a difficult decision for you. If it were me I would get my pets insured!
Vets bills are ridiculously high and if something happened to your cat you would be left with that to pay.
I don’t think you should leave it until your cat it 4 or 5. Something could happen to her now.
I am not aware of tabbys having more health problems but it’s not always about that. If your cat broke her leg for example, the bill could be £1000 or more.

Go for the pet insurance. Your cat is your baby right now and you need to make sure if anything ever comes up with her health you are covered.
