You don't have to get rid of them!
In fact, if you've had them for a while, and cleaned their litter box often, you're probably immune to toxoplasmosis.

i have two house rabbits, and i clean up after them, and i am fine. i make sure they have baths every month and if they touch something of the babies, i wash it. i imagine they are just like cats. i know your not supposed to handle cat litter, so i use bedding in thier litter box.

I know it is highly suggested not to clean the cats litter box while pregnant, but I do. I wear gloves and even a mask to cover my mouth and nose. I then wash my hands very, very well. You can only get it from the feces. It is less common for your cat to even have this if they are an indoor cat. In addition many people are exposed to it before they get pregnant, if they have been around cats their whole life. One other interesting thing I have read, is that it is more likely to get it from gardening without gloves, because stray cats will use your garden as a little box.

We had a cat for a while at the beginning of my pregnancy, it was our roomate's at the time. I would say make sure the litter is cleaned frequently and have someone else do it. Have the litter box somewhere that you are not commonly going (our roomate had his in the bathroom which was NOT a good place) also the amonia from the cat urine is not good to breath in either. No you do not need to get rid of your kitties though, you just should have someone else help with their care. If you absolutely have to clean it yourself get latex or medical gloves that you dispose every time as well as a mask to put on your face to vent out the odors while you clean!
Also remember not to hold snakes or other reptiles as you are much more suseptible to salmanila too!
congrats!!!! and good luck!

No, you don't have to get rid of them.
Have someone else deal with/change their litter...other than that, you're OK.
My sister's husband works out of town 2 weeks, home for 1...so when he's away, his parents come over and change the litter for her (they live in the same small town) when she's pregnant. She worked as a vet's assistant for years...she knows all the risks related, and she's got herself covered.

if your cats do not go outside then it is very rare that they have toxipasmosis(sp)? cats who go outdoors are more likely to carry it. im not sure about the rabbit....but if you are worried then have your hubby change the cat box.

You don't have to get rid of your cats. Just get your husband to change the box. You don't get toxoplasmosis from the cat, but from bacteria that can be present in the cat's feces. If you have had cats for years then you have probably already been exposed to toxoplasmoisis anyway. Just make sure that someone else cleans the litter box and everything should be fine. I don't know about rabbits. I would think that as long as someone else cleans out their cage then it shouldn't be a problem either, but I would probably ask my doctor about it just to make sure.

Toxoplasmosis is from ingesting cat feces. (eating cat poop) just wash your hands thoroughly and wear gloves and a mask while changing the litter. I put my cat's litter box outside when I found out I was pregnant, now he meows at the door when he has to "go".
