Hi, I’m thinking of opening a small business (in the United States) providing cat sitting services (a cat boarding house). How would I go about addressing the liability issue? Is it difficult to seek out such an insurance policy? Where do I get started? Also, what other things should I do to set up this service, like incorporate or start a LLC?

You want to start a business – now you have to go through the local hoops to get a business license. If you think you are going to operate from your home you may be in for a big surprise. Most cities limit the number of pets you can have. So – check with your city to see what to do about a business license. Next call an insurance agent and ask about business liability insurance – you can always shop around for price once you get the basics about liability coverage.
You would create an LLC by filing the proper forms with your secretary of state. Find them on your state web site. You can find boiler plate organizational documents on line for a fee.
