It may well be a marketing gimmick really, after 4 weeks is up you’ll get a letter from the insurance company saying …
“Your free cover expires in 2 weeks, to continue protecting your pet sign up now.
If you don’t, you don’t love your kitten and will go to hell”.
OK I made that last bit up… but you get the point.
Of course you don’t have to sign up, you can just take the 6 weeks cover and that’s that, but the company is willing to risk 6 weeks free cover as a way of getting you onto their books for good.

I work for the Cats Protection and we have just recently started offering a free 6week trail with pet plan.
I don’t believe we pay for it and the new owners certainly don’t, I think it will be petplan themselves. Considering when you adopt a new cat from us we suggest you keep it in for four weeks, thats only really 2 weeks left of cover when your cat ventures outside.
You get a letter sent around the 4th/5th week and if you don’t want to renew it you don’t have to do anything at all which is good.
It’s just to encourage more people to have pet insurance really.

Breeders can use Petplan to register kittens and puppies. This gives the new owners free 6wks insurance (which also gives the breeder peace of mind). They may be other companies that do this also.
Use the 6wks wisely to shop around to obtain other quotes as the insurance company will definately contact you asking if you wish to continue with their cover. If you are pre-armed with other quotes you will know how competitive they are, or you may beable to use them as a bargaining tool!

If you buy a puppy which is Kennel Club Registered, the KC Insurers offer the 1st 6 weeks free if you sign up with them.http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/236
Don’t know if there’s a similar scheme for cats.
