How Can I Persuade My Parents To Let Me Get A Kitten? 10 Points Best Answer Cat Owners!!?

February 24th, 2010 → 12:18 am @ // 10 Comments

I am a 14 year old girl. We have a 1 year old cat already, and he was supposed to be mine. We adopted him at 9 months, now he’s 18 months. He doesnt really like me…i mean…he does, but he likes my dad better…but either way he’s a bundle of fun and i love him no matter what! Anyways, before we adopted him, he lived with his sister (who passed away) and I think he’s been getting lonely while I am at school from 8:00-4:30. My parents work… I want to get a kitten, not an adult cat, so I can train it on a leash and harness etc (my current cat is already leash trained lol) so it can be an indoor cat like mine. Anyways, how do you think I should go about asking my parents? I am planning on saving around £250 (i already have £100) towards the initial adoption, buying insurance, and also 2nd vaccinations. My room is ALWAYS clean (i clean the whole house lol) my cat is brushed every day, water changed, fed on time, litter scooped etc. I just dont want to ask the wrong way so they just say ‘NO!’ lol. How do you think i could persuade them? And I know kittens have to be fed 3 times a day, I will be getting the kitten (if it works out) during my 6 week holliday, and after that it will have an automatic feeder like my current cat…

You sound responsible beyond your years. Just simply say both you and your cat are missing a companion and want to know if you can adopt a friend for your little furry friend. Cats choose their people, not the other way around unfortunately. Sometimes they like everyone but some are more “one person” cats than others. I took my grandmothers cat after my grandfather died and she was definitely in mourning (he had passed away and my grandmother was moving to an assisted living facility). I thought she would snap out of it and she did with me a little bit. She would sit with me but she spent most of her time behind a desk. It was pretty sad. She was so bonded to him that she never did get over it.
With all the planning you have been doing, and preparations you have made if you were my kid I’d let you have another cat. Besides, cats are pretty self sufficient besides not being able to scoop their own litter box or drive themselves to check ups. You seem to have that stuff covered.
    Good luck!

Sounds to me like you have all your ducks in a row. How could they possibly say no to such a responsible you. Try letting them read all your answers as you get them. Good luck.

You could convince them by saying how good you were in haveing the first cat and that he was getting lonely evrey time you go to school or when they go to work! hope you get a new kitten!

i think 14 is too young and immature and children are just too selfish to have pets leave it to the adults

two kittens are better then one! your cat isn’t too old and most likely still has kitten-like qualities eg. very playful and energetic. a single kitten may grow up to be a fairly solitary adult cat who prefers its own company and has lost all those endearing kitten characteristics. two cats will keep each other playful, but they will not be less affectionate to their owner than a single kitten! so you can still get your own playtime with them and when you and your family are out and about, they have each other! i have two and its not any harder then one except you have to stock up on more cat food.

tell them your whole plan like you did for us, its very responsible and will probably impress them. also bring up the idea of guard cats, i have one (a maine coon cat, kinda like a mini bobcat). and cats kill mice. bring up your reasons for wanting to get one, maybe throw in a few reasons why your parents might want a kitten too. if all else fails try feeding a stray kitten until its convinced that its yours, thats how i got my first cat when my parents were firmly anti-pet

You really sound like a very together girl, your parents should be proud of you. I suggest you talk about how you think your cat is lonely and needs a companion. Also tell them that you will be responsible for the care of this cat just like you do the other cat. I hope you are adopting a rescue cat instead from a breeder.
