Has Pet Insurance Saved Your Pets Life?

February 2nd, 2010 → 12:21 am @ // 6 Comments

Has any one ever actully been in a situtuation where they have said “well thank god we had pet insurance otherwise we would not have been able to save our dog/cat”? I’m just not sure I trust it.
If you need insurance because you may not have the money at the time of the incident how can it really help….You still have to pay with your own money and then be reinbursed, right?
Is there any insurance that works like regular health insurance. You know, heres my card and all is taken care of short of a small co-pay.
If not there should be, that would actully save pets lives.

Some people love pet insurance. I am not a fan. Most of the ones I’ve looked into have a ton of restrictions age being a main one, and on older dog usually needs more care. Instead I am a fan of setting up an emergancy fund or account. Put money in it every month. An account allows you to use it on any pet at any time no matter what the issue or what the age, plus as the account grows if a pet passes the account carriers for your new companion. You do need to build a large account though I always reccomend a few grand. Use the account for any large expence and not for basics like yearly visits unless you put enough in to cover those with still leaving money for an emergancy. This works well for me but for others insurance works better. It all comes down to individual prefrence and what works for you.

not in my case but if you dog gets badly hurt and you cant afford treatment then yes
if it wasnt your dogs fault about the accident then you can pay for the treatment then and then sue the person or take them to court
some dog attacks have rang up bills around $1500

Insurance is pretty expensive to me if your pet does not get very sick in a year you end up spending waay more than just the regular vet bills.
For my puppy I got a quote for how much full-coverage insurance would cost (I would still have to pay, but I’d be reimbursed) and it was about $50CDN a month… so instead of doing that I put $50/month into an e-savings account with RBC which has no fees and has high interest. That way I have a savings of $600/year for emergencies only (not heartworm / vaccs / checkups, etc.). It’s not like I don’t have other money in the bank as well but it’s nice to know that I have it sitting there in case something ever happened.
