Im looking to buy a used car and have found one thats in excellent condition, low mileage etc. But it is Cat D on HPI. Now i know this means that it has been previously damaged and repaired, but does anyone know whether it would be a bad idea to buy it and why? Does it affect me much? Its just its obviously a lot cheaper to buy this one but wont do it if it means i cant get insurance or will have problems etc.

Our old car was a cat D right off – it was cheaper for the insurance company to pay out rather then have the car repaired – we got insurance but one of the main structural points in the car was twisted – if we were involved in another accident the car would have just crumpled up on inpact

Cat D means its been a write off not just damaged. It will always be a Cat D
I it possible to de-register it, i believe it costs 10% its original value payed to the DVLA. Contact them for details how to.
It will only affect you when you come to re-sell it.
plus you have to tell your insurance company

If you take a mechanic with you and get him to check it over and send a report in to your insurance company you should be o/k,but the car must always be stated as a cat d it is illegal to sell the car without declaring that.I but a lot of cars from insurance compamies and turn them over no problem.

Have a look at this Emma and then decide what to do.http://www.banwells.co.uk/usedcars.htm
To be honest I would never buy a car that has been accident reapired and put back on the road. Even with repair, the chassis could still have weak spots – I have seen it happen where a car has been accident reapired and put on the road only to crumble in an accident. Not saying all reapirs are like that BUT – you know what I mean
