Does Anyone Have Pet Insurance? If You Do, Do You Feel It’s Worth It?

I had an 11 year old cat that passed away in Aug. and the vet bills were huge. I have a kitten now and I’m wondering if pet insurance is worth getting. And if it is should I get it now or later?

I do not, but I did consider it when I got two kittens nearly four years ago.
After reading through all the disclaimers and looking at the monthly fees I decided it was not worth it.
Technically you could take that monthly fee and put it away in a special account to use for vet emergencies. Most people wouldn’t but it makes more sense than the insurance, IMHO.

Get it now as it kicks in about a month after you start coverage. I would get it as you never know what is going to come up with your animal.

Insurance companies never lose money on their coverages – they are capable of wiggling out of a lot of things and you could find your investment to be worthless over time.
Put the amount of the premium money into a bank account monthly and expect that over a cat’s lifetime you will have to spend it for medical treatment. Even if you earn only a small amount of interest on the account you will always have something on hand for emergencies and you will be making the money, not the insurance company.

I looked into it recently and decided it wasn’t worth it. However, when my cat was about two years old, she slipped jumping from the sink to the toilet and smacked her face, knocking one of her front canine teeth back into her gum. It was incredibly expensive for her to have emergency cat dental surgery and I would’ve loved to have had the insurance then! But you never know if/when something like that is going to happen. Nothing has happened since then with either of my cats.
I like the suggestion above of putting the monthly charge into a savings account for your pet. That way you always have it on hand, and if you never need to use it, you still have the cash!
