No, you do NOT have to get pet insurance, there is no law that says you must.
Unfortunately though because the cost of vetinary bills do seem to have increased quite dramatically since I had my first dog, it proves very expensive if your pet does need treatment.
I don’t like the fact that now when, most vets or vet nurses, ask, the first question they ask is “is your pet insured”, which I’m rather cynical about.
I’m sure that the bulk of vets are genuine, and are concerned about whichever pet they are treating, but it does beg the question “will the treatment be any different depending on how I answer that question”. I would hope that it wouldn’t but the cynical part of me says that it might encourage more unscrupulous practices to administer more expensive drugs, or offer treatment that may not substantially effect the pet for the better.
The best way of demonstrating what I mean is to think of it as the difference between you choosing to buy a supermarkets own brand Aspirin at £0.20 per pack, or buying a leading brand name product that does the same job but costs £3.50 per pack, but that is only my opinion.
If you decide that you would rather be safe than sorry, just in case your kitten develops health problems, then I would suggest trying some of the links below that will compare prices across a wide range of suppliers of pet insurance.

you dont have to. i had insurance for about the first year i had my missy but she never had to go to the vets so instead i decided not to renew the insurance and put the money i was spending on it in a savings account. that way if she ever needs to go i have the money and if not i still have the money. it’s worth doing one or the other as something unexpected could happen which could result in large vet bills.

you dont need pet insurance unless maybe it was REALLY expensive. just take it to the vet regularly. make sure they are healthy, safe, and have a tag incase of being loss.

Don’t bother its expensive people rarely claim and if like my parents you do they increase your premium and refuse to cover that illness at renewal plus there is generally an excess of about £50

I don’t have health insurance on my cats (indoor cats, less risk of injury and disease), but I do on my dog. It all depends on your financial situation, I think. If you don’t have a large sum of money to put on the table for unexpected vet fees, then I would recommend that you get an insurance.
I don’t know what the costs are where you are at, but where I come from it used to be 100-150 USD per year, which isn’t terribly expensive in my opinion.

It depends on wether youre goiing to keep him as an indoor cat or let him outside. if hes an indoor cat then youre probably not going to need it until hes older when he might get problems caused by old age but if hes an outdoor cat hes more likely to get into fights with the neighbour hood cats and if he comes of worse will need to see a vet. It costs me 25pound just for the vet to look at my cat and then with the cost of antibiotics etc can take it up to 60 pound plus. If you keep him as an indoor cat get his bits chopped of so hes less inclined to try and get outside. so if you can afford 60 p[lus a time then i wouldnt bother with insurance but in the longrun youre better with insurance.

No you dont HAVE to have insurance on your kitty….Ive never had insurance on any of my pets but I can see(if you can afford it) how having it would be very beneficial shoudl they fall itll, vet costs can be VERY costly just like humans. As long as you plan to keep you kitten healhty & vet checked & for best measures kept inside then I really see no reason you would need to have insurance on him/her……Ive never needed it in all my 30 years of pet ownership (Knock on wood) BEST OF LUCK TO YOU HUN!!!♥♥

No. The point that may be hard to grasp is that it is not insurance at all, it is prepayment. They just call it insurance.
If you are in the business of selling cats, that is a different matter.
The correct procedure is to have a budget slush fund that covers any number of things that might happen. Don’t insure your hobbies.

you dont have to have insurance but it is a good idea it doesnt cost alot monthly. With insurance some of them give good offers it doesnt just cover u if ur cat needs to go to the vets it also helps if your cat was to go missing like rewards it is good to have.

I think it depends on how much you can save, and maybe whether or not you could get a credit card in an emergency.
If you save £20 a month in a high interest savings account and never need to claim, you’ll have the money for something else rather than giving it to the insurance company.
But that does depend on you putting the money away each month, no excuses!

I’m not that familiar with pet insurance, but I don’t think it’s something you have to have. If your friend’s cat is expensive and has never been sick, she may be referring to the spay/neuter and vaccine costs. You can work around that, though. Some vets offer vaccine clinics, with discounted vaccines or no exam fee. And try shelters or vet tech schools for spay/neuter and vaccines. Many of them have it for less money.
There’s a certain chain of vet hospitals that have something similar to insurance. But in my experience, those places are not the best for ill animals.
If you want to get insurance, just make sure you find out all you can about it. Check out Pet Assure, too.

I would advise it. I’ve got my labrador puppy insured. It costs me £100 approx for the whole year. Last month he cut his foot open on some glass and the vets bill was nearly £350!! Because he’s insured, all I have to pay of that is £50 excess. It does make sense and at least you know if anything does happen you’re covered.
It os not compulsary though, just advisable.

Its not that expensive. Its totally up to you. Anything could happen to your cat. We didn’t have pet insurance, and our 2 1/2 year old was healthy. We took him for a check up, found out he had a heart 3 times the normal size, 7 days and 1700 dollars later, he had a seizure and died.

I would advise it as a MUST, I have got out an Insurance on my 7 month old kitty and it only costs £6.39 per month and I think it’s well worth it as from a previous experience I had years ago. I had two cats and when I got them, had them both Insured, just as well, after a couple of months one of them got really ill and had to go to the Queen Elizabeth hospital for animals in London for the week, it cost well over £1000, something I couldn’t afford, but as I had Insurance, I was extremely lucky.

Do read up the pay outs policy if your cat has illness or accident. For the my local pet insurance, I don’t think it is worth it. I prefer to set aside some money and put it in bank for my pets.
Do read those terms and conditions. There are things which are not covered and when time comes, u will be wondering why you receive so little money.

There is no law saying you have to no.
Whether it’s worth it depends on your financial situation. If you wouldn’t really be able to afford the insurance payments don’t get it.If you could afford the payments but you could also afford an expensive vet treatment if your cat got sick don’t get it.
Only if your somewhere in between this is it worth considering. It is a tough decision as so many things are not covered by it but equally vet bills can be really expensive.

I don’t have pet insurance and my cats are sick or hurt at least once a year.
But if your cat gets a long illness which is going to cost you a lot of money over a couple of days or weeks then you do need some sort of plan.
When my young cat got kidney disease my bill came up to +-
ZAR 9000-00 (US dollars 1290-00) which is a lot of money for South African’s. Thank goodness for my credit card.
I will rather use my credit card than get insurance but every one has their own preferences.

I have two cats and neither of them have been sick, but you never know what might happen. I would recomend putting at least 10 dollars away into savings per month just incase something happens. Its a bit cheaper than insurance and incase something unexpected happens you will have that money ready.

No,it isn’t compulsory to get pet insurance, but having been hit with a vet bill for £1300 to get my Siamese cat back to health after a bad illness was enough to convince me of the benefits of it!
The fact is that when you get a cat or any pet for that matter, you take on responsibility fo its wellbeing and health. My friend is a vet and it is a never ending source of heartache and frustration to her that animals which are brought in to be treated when they have minor and easily treatable illnesses or injuries end up being put down because their owner is too selfish and tight fisted to pay for it, and it is much cheaper to have the animal put down. Had these animals been insured, the issue of treatment cost would never have arisen.
So do yourself and your kitten a favour, get the insurance. You won’t regret it. And your kitten definitely won’t.

You don’t have to get pet insurance for any pet, but if your pet fell ill with something other than every day things, and it was going to need a lot of treatment, at least if you do take out insurance you will be covered. I have insured my animals for many many years and fortunately never had cause to use it, but it gives me peace of mind.

Hi,
Pet Insurance is something i seriously would advise you to get.
it will cost you as little as £5 a month (maybe a bit more maybe a bit less it all depends on what insurance you go with)
reason i say this is because my cat went out one night and never came back until i recieved a phone call from Medivet (a month later) to advise me that someone had found her and took her there.
i was told that she was pregnant as there was this golf ball size lump on her abdemon wall and that because i had her chipped thats how they traced me. when i got to the vets i explained that i had her done the previous year and that she could not be pregnant. the vet then told me that she needed to have an operation to find out what the lump was, she said that they would have to run blood test’s and x-rays etc and i was looking at somehwere between £700 – £800 cost! luckily for me i am recieving Council Tax Benefit and i could go to a surgery called PDSA which is a charity run based organisation. so i took my cat there and they found out that she had a Hernia (caused by her previous spaying) and i paid them a donation and that was it.
so i seriously would advise you to get insurance as you never know what could happen to your cat.

Definately a good idea. We don’t want anything to happen to our pets, but when it does, it pays to have insurance. Just to x ray a suspected broken bone for example, could cost £30 upwards. Hopefully, you’re kitten will keep its 9 lives intact, but should the worst happen, you will have peace of mind.

I’ve owned a number of cats, over 28yrs (I have 2 now) and have never bothered with insurance. My 2 are well-fed, treated for parasites regularly, and are kept in at night. (they have both been spayed too) The only time they’ve been to the vet was for micro chipping

It costs us £8 per month with virgin money and although we have never had to use it – we get piece of mind.
I can’t think of anything worse than having to decide the cost of my cats life! We pay on direct debit and hardly notice it.
Just have 4 less cappuccinos per month or don’t buy the round of drink and ya will always know that kitty can be helped!
Get some quotes!!!
