I’ve just taken my 16month old cat to the vet and he reckons its either a cyst or a hernia. I don’t have insurance, am I able to get cover for him now? I’m guessing most likely not and if this is the case can anyone give me an idea of costs for treatment for him. Kindest regards Shelly.

I doubt that you could get insurance to cover this treatment because it is preexisting. You could look into insurance for future vet visits since he is so young.
The costs would depend on what needs to be done. A hernia is fixed with surgery similar to a spay (I take it the hernia/cyst is in his abdomen). The costs would include medications and followup visit for suture removal.
It this is a cyst, the surgery would be similar to the hernia, and the vet will probably wish to send a biopsy to the lab for analysis. This would be an additional cost, but you can decline having it analyzed.
In either case, the vet should be able to give you an estimate of the costs.
There is a credit card just for medical expenses, including veterinary, called Care Credit. My Care Credit has saved me many times with emergencies. The link is below, you can see what vet offices accept this card in your area and apply online. They were doing a promotional that the first 3 months of repayment are interest free–that’s a good deal.
Purrs to you and kitty.

I am pretty sure that the pet insurance will not cover pre-existing conditions. We have an Akita and when we took him into the vet for a check up, we found out that he needed to have surgery on his knee and when we looked into getting the pet insurance to help cover the cost, we could get the insurance but it would not cover the surgery because his condition was pre-existing. We did however apply for a care credit card and had his surgery done and are making payments to the company. The cost for treatment can vary depending upon what it actually is and what they would need to do to repair it. For us, it was 600.00 to diagnose and 1600.00 for the surgery but that was on a 95 pound dog, so it could be considerably less for a kitty. I would talk to your vet and see if he/she can give you a rough idea of what this may cost and then explore your options from there.

Unfortunately, if you do insure now and don’t disclose the current illness, when you claim the Vet has to submit a treatment history before they consider the claim, they will find out that you visited the Vet before the policy started and not pay out. But get insurance anyway it’s worth it for the future.
Luckily we did and our cat was attacked by a dog and had 3 operations on her back leg to fix it, and the total Vet bills came to over £2,000 insurance paid.

You’ll need to check with various pet insurance companies but many of them will not cover for a condition the cat already has, and for any condition it gets within 14 days of you starting the insurance.

can’t get insurance for a pre existing condition, which this is, you’re looking at 3-400 pounds.
