At What Point Is It Inhumane To Let The Cat Keep Living?

February 25th, 2010 → 6:18 pm @ // 7 Comments

I have a cat who has not eaten since thursday. I took him to the vet this morning and he gave him some under the skin fluids and medicine to make it puke less. It actually ate a tiny bit today, but not much. During this who time it has not moved around except to drink water or go pee pee in the litter box. It does not even bother to bury the stuff. It moves around slowly and when it sits, it sits in a strange way with its paws folded under its belly. The vet says that if it does not eat in 2 days to bring it back in for xrays. I will not opt for the surgery starting at $1,500 if the vet recommend it. I will never get a pet again without insurance and I suggest you don’t either. Anyway, I am wondering what you would do it your cat reached the 7 week mark with no eating. At this point he seems sorta fine, but I can’t help but think he is in pain. P.S. If you wish to fund the expensive surgery, please contact me.

Unless you are sure that your cat is in terrible pain i do not suggest that you put it down because i have 2 cats and one of them i ACCIDENTALY smashed her tail in the couch which bent her tail and made it so painful that her left back leg started to give out then i took her into the vet and they did a surgery and gave her some pain medication which she is off of now and she is the happiest cat in the world right now even though she’s a little bald from her being stessed out and her hair falling but it’s growing back…..anyway i think that it was worth the money to save her life.

There is no way to tell whether the cat is alive or dead until you open the box and look. Until then, the cat exists in a superposition of being both alive and dead at the same time.
On a side note, slightly off-topic, the vet would probably be the best one to answer this question. If the cat is going to die, or be sick like that for the rest of its life, best to put it out of its memory now.

I would let the cat go in peace. You have to ask yourself, are you keeping the cat alive for the cat or for you? If it is the second reason, it is completely wrong.

7 days is a lot different than 7 weeks.
Find out what is wrong before you make that decision.
Have you done any blood tests yet? How often is it vomiting?

: Let the cat go in peace. He is probably struggling so it would be best.

It is most fortunate for our pets that euthanasia is an option. A human living with such misery without the means for a cure would be forced to suffer until death. I sympathize with your inability to pay for such an expensive surgery, it is not an uncommon problem with animals.
I would recommend euthanasia to end the suffering. I’m sorry your kitty had to go through such a terrible experience, but without the surgery he/she will die very painfully.

I would only consider surgery if there was a decent likelihood for a good outcome. Was your vet actually able to make any sort of diagnosis?
Ultimately, it’s a rough call…If I’m considering prolonging treatment, I generally ask myself: “Am I doing this for me, or for the cat? What is the cat’s quality of life and is the treatment likely to improve it to an acceptable level?”
If the cat has not eaten any sort of nutrition for a week, organs are shutting down. Has your vet not advised any sort of force-feeding? My vet would never allow a cat to go 7 days without any nutrition. Did the vet find a blockage? Or does he have no idea?
